NTA to double NEET Exam Centers to prop up Social Distancing

NTA will conduct the NEET-UG exam on 26 July. With this announcement, the National Testing Agency is at a crossroads to administer the pen and paper exam for around 15 lakh aspirants while conforming to the norms of social distancing amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

As NEET-UG is a pen and paper-based exam, it is conducted all around the country at the same time, unlike JEE Main and JEE Advanced, that are conducted online and in multiple shifts. To resolve this issue, NTA is planning to conduct the exam at around 6000 exam centers contrary to the 3000 centers for normal conditions. This plan will enable a minimum of 2 metres distance between two students. Usually, Kendra Vidyalayas, CBSE-affiliated schools, engineering colleges and state government colleges are chosen for the exam. It will be challenging for the agency to figure out additional 3000 exam centers in a limited time.

Regarding the syllabus of the academic year 2021

Many students posed questions to Mr ‘Nishank’ regarding the syllabus for the academic year 2021. Students have lost more than 3 months of study due to COVID-19 outbreak and lockdown. Mr Pokhriyal said that the academic schedule has been delayed and MHRD has asked central and state boards to address this situation by reducing the syllabus for the commencing academic year 2021. The syllabus will be reduced in proportion to the time period lost for this academic year which in turn will reduce the study pressure on students of the new batch. HRD Minister informed that the syllabus of JEE Main and NEET in the next academic year will be reduced.

Questions raised about 12th Board Examinations

Students were also concerned about the dates for 12th boards examination for CBSE and other boards. Mr Ramesh Pokhriyal has announced that the new dates for board examinations will be announced soon within a day or two. Dates for the remaining 29 board examinations will be decided in accordance with the situation over how severely has COVID-19 affected a particular district. He talked about conducting of board exams in green and orange zones of the country would be suitable for students or not. A bigger question raised here is for students appearing for both 12th boards and NEET in this year as 12th percentage is a deciding factor for admissions to various top institutions of India.

HRD Ministry to announce NEET 2020 New Dates on 5th May

The Ministry for Human Resource Development will announce the new examination dates for NEET 2020 on 5th May 2020, Press Trust of India (PTI) tweeted. New dates for JEE Main 2020 will also be announced on the same date. New dates for NEET will be announced on the official website of NEET 2020ntaneet.nic.in – by NTA on behalf of the HRD Ministry. The examination dates along with the release of admit cards have been postponed by NTA to ensure the safety of students amid the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The dates have been postponed till the end of May 2020 as per the official notice. Many have prospected that the dates of examination will be delayed further until June.

Will students remain safe?

Soon after the tweet by PTI, users started reacting adversely towards the proposition. A large number of users were mainly concerned about the safety of students. Conducting the examinations amid the growing pandemic poses a risk to the health of a large number of students. Moreover, it is possible that the young students might infect their aged parents too, who are at a higher risk due to increased death rates amongst the aged population. There has been no word regarding what measures will be taken for the safety of everyone, but it might be possible that exam authority has already made a decision on what precautions will be taken. It is being suggested that exam authorities will sanitize exam centers while conducting exams in single shifts over a period of around 2 weeks or 14 days.

Central vs State Lockdown

Many reactions from users were regarding state lockdowns. A bigger question towards the validity of exam dates will be, whether the state government will allow conducting the examination. There have been statements from various state governments that the lockdown in respective states will be followed until the end of June. There has been no clarification on disparity among state and central government over when the lockdown should be lifted off. Moreover, state governments have the power to impose a state-wide lockdown to ensure safety during COVID-19 pandemic. It is uncertain if the exams will be conducted even before June due to this.

While many students and parents felt peace after this announcement. The announcement of dates for NEET 2020 will help students get rid of the anxiety that has been hovering around for so many days. Students will have an assurance of admissions to colleges and universities. Mental pressure due to uncertainty of admissions had been growing among candidates. This announcement will probably help ease down the tensions among students and can focus back on studies.
